Hezbollah supports a Christian candidate for the presidency

Lebanon’s Islamist resistance movement Hezbollah has announced its support for a Christian candidate in the country’s next presidential election. Suleiman Frengih, a Maronite Christian politician, previously served in the country’s cabinet.
Daily Sabah reported that Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrullah made this announcement. He said that his party met with the leader of Hezbollah Free Patriotic Movement Party Jebran Basil.
Hassan Nasrullah said in a speech, “I told Basil – Hezbollah wants to see him or Suleiman Frengih as a presidential candidate. But Basil does not want to be a candidate to replace former President Michel Aoun. Michel Aoun left power in October 2022 after six years in office.
The Hezbollah chief also said he had started talks with allies to support Frengih as president.
Frengih, 57, previously held several ministries in Lebanon, including health and housing. However, Hezbollah’s support alone is not enough for Frengih’s presidential candidacy. Rather it needs the support of other blocks.
