Debar’s child killed by poison, woman sentenced to life imprisonment

A woman was sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Tk 20,000 and 6 months of unpaid imprisonment for killing the child (son) of a dewar by drinking poison at Kanaighat in Sylhet.

On Monday (September 4) at noon, Sylhet District and Sessions Judge (5th) Court and Special Tribunal (6th) learned Judge Md. Akhter Hossain announced this verdict.

The convicted accused is Sumana Akhter Surma (35), wife of Taj Uddin of Barachatul village of Kanighat upazila of Sylhet.

According to court sources, on December 23, 2017, Surma killed Nadeem Ahmed, a one-and-a-half-month-old child of Nazrul Islam, a Saudi Arabian expatriate, by feeding him pesticides on December 23, 2017. Nadeem’s aunt Surma took revenge on Devar’s wife and committed the murder. After the incident, Nazrul Islam’s wife filed a murder case with Surma as the sole accused.

Meanwhile, accused Surma fled after the incident. Later on January 28, 2018, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-9 arrested him from Kadmatoli Bus Terminal area of Sylhet Dakshin Surma.

During the case, the court sentenced the accused Surma to life imprisonment after taking the testimony of the plaintiff, investigation officer, doctor Jabanbandi and 16 witnesses. He was present in the court when the verdict was announced.

In the case, the lawyer for the accused was Noor Ahmed and the lawyer for the plaintiff was APP Mustafa Delwar Al-Azhar.
