“Attack on Journalist for protesting against abuse”

A Chhatra League activist named Iqbal Mahmud Rana ambushed a journalist at Jagannath University Campus (JnU). The incident took place in the canteen of the university on Wednesday (July 19) at two o’clock in the afternoon. Joint Secretary of Jagannath University Reporters Unity and Asian TV reporter Amrito Roy was injured in the indiscriminate kicking of Rana, a follower of JnU Chhatra League general secretary Akhtar Hossain. Daily Bangladesh Samachar university representative and JnU Reporters Unity Publication Secretary Tasdikul Hasan was present on the occasion. It is known that the workers of JnU Chhatra League previously threw away the tokens of other students in the canteen while taking lunch without tokens and abused the students and the staff in the cafeteria. Chhatra League activist Sajedul Islam Saikat of social work department and student of economics department Iqbal Mahmud Rana threatened the journalist when he was seen in the cafeteria and questioned. Later, the accused ambushed the table of journalists who were eating. At one point, Iqbal Mahmud Rana started kicking the Asian TV reporter Amrito Roy. Meanwhile, General Secretary of Jagannath University Chhatra League, SM Akhtar Hossain came and restrained the attackers and assured of justice and asked to put the matter at a standstill. But when the afternoon passed and night fell, he did not say anything. When the matter spread to the campus, Jagannath University Student Welfare Director and President of the Teachers’ Association Professor Dr. Ainul Islam attended there and learned about the matter and spoke to Reporters Unity. Later, he recommended as director of student welfare and advised the written complaint to the proctor. Professor Dr. Mustafa Kamal, Proctor of the University on this issue. said, “I will arrange a proper trial for this incident. According to the written complaint, I will call the student and take quick action.” Ibrahim Faraji, president of the JnU Chhatra League, said that it is not desirable to lay hands on the journalist. Not only the organizational system but also the university environment should be brought under academic discipline to keep it stable.
