Farida Begum (55). Gaibandha lived in Surer Vita village of Boali Union in Sadar Upazila. Now lives in the house number 112 of the union’s Harinsingha shelter project. But the house is not allotted in the name of Farida. Majida-Zabial couple, residents of Tata Rahim’s home area of the same union, own this house. A couple of weeks ago, the Majida-Zabial couple called Farida, a mother of three children, from Dhaka and let her stay there. Later, they asked Farida to leave the house after a week as she did not pay when they demanded money.
Farida Begum said, Majida is a niece. I used to work at home in Dhaka. He called me on the phone and said, ‘We have everything, you have nothing. We got a house, you stay here. Let’s arrange the work. After leaving the house for three days, Majida locked the door. They say Omu wants 80,000 taka. Don’t take the hammock anymore. Later, everyone around says how many rooms have been unlocked.
Majida-Jabial covered up in the presence of the journalist. However, their great freedom fighter Abdul Bari Sarkar said, I don’t understand why Zabial’s wife (Majida) brought Farida from Dhaka. One has all the land and also cultivates it. There is no reason for him to get a house here. It is not acceptable.

This situation is not only Majida-Jabial couple. The situation is the same for Rafiqul, Saeed and Sampa-Lovelu couple of the shelter project. None of them live in these houses. Sampa Begum said, I work in garments in Narayanganj. Go to the shelter sometimes. I asked my mother to stay in that room.

A woman who got a house in the shelter project, who did not want to be named, said that many houses are locked here. Sometimes one or two rooms are opened and locked again. No one knows where the name is.

Another shelter project in Chauddagaurisingh village of Boali Union of Sadar Upazila. Ram Babu, who got a house in that shelter project, is in the same situation. Lives in district town.

Ram Babu’s wife Swapna Rani said, I live in a rented house in the city. I am in a lot of trouble with two marriageable daughters including a younger daughter. Girls study in the city. Cities are far away from shelter projects, so stay in cities. Go to the shelter sometimes.
Same situation with Shambhu, Juthika, Chandan, Madan Kumar and Selina Begum. They also do not live in Chaudgaurising shelter house. Selina Begum lives in Tabupara area of the city. He spoke with his son Haroon Or-Rashid Shanta.

He said, mother works as a tailor. I have been here for two and a half years. If you go to the shelter, there will be no customers. So stay here. I go there sometimes.

Bablu Mia (45), Naya Mia (55) and Musa Mia (38) living in Chaudgaurising village shelter project. They said that many people have occupied the houses in the project. But no one stays. Been living here for over a year now. Many people who take possession of the house come and visit, but do not stay.
Akkas Ali Ilyas, chairman of the panel of Bowali UP, said that we have only been given the responsibility of looking after. If there is no one there after getting the house, then the matter will be reported to the upazila executive officer.

Gaibandha Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shariful Alam said, we have no complaint that they have occupied the house but are not living there. The respective union council chairpersons have been given the responsibility. If so, the ownership of the house will be cancelled.

Deputy Commissioner Oliur Rahman said that everyone should stay in the allotted room. If there is none there may be several reasons. One can go to different places in search of work. However, the verification process is ongoing. There are alternative arrangements in case of not being in the house after getting the allotment.
