Flash floods in Congo kill 176

At least 176 people have been killed in flash floods in eastern Congo. The provincial government of South Kivu province said in a statement that heavy rains in the province on Thursday caused a river to overflow and cause extensive damage and loss of life in the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi. South Kivu Governor Theo Ngwabidze Kasi said the death toll from the floods was 176. He said many people are still missing. But local civil society member Kasol Martin said 227 bodies were found there.

He also said that people are sleeping in the open. Schools and hospitals were swept away by flood waters.

The sky cleared on Friday, with flat houses and tin rice emerging from beneath thick layers of mud.

Floods and landslides are not uncommon in South Kivu province. In October 2014, such a devastating flood happened there. At that time, more than seven hundred houses were destroyed in this area of Congo.

According to the United Nations, more than 130 people were reported missing at the time. In addition, due to heavy rains and floods, tragic events also occurred in other parts of this African country. At least 21 people were reported dead and several missing after a landslide in North Kivu province last month.
