It has been 6 years since the brutal murder of former MP Manjurul Islam Liton of Gaibandha-1 (Sunderganj) Constituency. Meanwhile, the relatives of the slain member of parliament and local people are angry because the order of hanging the convicts has not been executed even three years after the verdict was announced.
On December 31, 2016, he was shot dead in his own house in Master Para of Sarbananda Union of Sundarganj Upazila. His younger sister Fahmida Bulbul Kakali filed a case at Sundarganj police station accusing five-six unknown persons in this incident. After the investigation of the MP Liton murder case, the investigating officer filed a charge sheet in the court against 8 people including the main planner Abdul Quader Khan on April 30, 2017.
The testimony of this murder case, which was discussed on April 8, 2018, started and ended on October 31. 59 people including the plaintiff, the wife of the deceased and the investigating officer gave evidence in the court.
Judge Dilip Kumar Bhowmik of the Gaibandha District and Sessions Judge’s Court announced the sensational murder case verdict on November 28, 2019.
In the verdict, all seven accused, including former Jatiya Party MP Abdul Quader Khan, were sentenced to death. Among them, the main accused in the case is retired colonel Dr. Abdul Quader was a Member of Parliament before Liton in Gaibandha-1 (Sunderganj) Constituency. Others are his close people. They are Dr. Quader’s private assistant. Shamchujjoha, driver Abdul Hannan, domestic worker Mehdi Hasan, distant nephew and caretaker of the house Shaheen Mia, former garment worker Anwarul Islam Rana and Chandan Kumar Roy.
Six of the eight accused were present when the verdict was pronounced. One died of illness in prison. Another accused Chandan Kumar Roy was absconding. After being absconding for a long time, RAB caught death sentence convict Chandan Kumar Roy in Bhomra area of Satkhira border district on September 11. Syeda Khursida Jahan Smriti, MP Liton’s wife and vice president of Upazila Awami League, said that Manjurul Islam Liton was the leader of soil and people. He was brutally murdered. The sooner the execution of the killers is carried out, the more his soul and our souls will rest in peace.
MP Liton’s elder sister and President of Sundarganj Upazila Awami League Afrauza Bari said, I lost my younger brother Liton prematurely. Demand immediate execution of his killers. Various programs have been taken up by the party in his memory.
He also said that MP Liton was a symbol of the development of the people of Sundarganj Upazila. The murderers did not let him finish his work. We are working tirelessly to finish the unfinished works left by him. Advocate for the state, District Judge and Sessions Judge Court Public Prosecutor Farooq Ahmed Prince said that the case is currently awaiting the High Court appeal hearing. We hope that the appeal will be resolved soon and the judgment of the trial court will be upheld by hanging the accused.
President of Sundarganj Upazila Awami League Afrauza Bari said, on the occasion of the death anniversary of Manjurul Islam Liton, the family organized a prayer in the Master Para of Sarbananda Union of his home upazila on Saturday. In addition, a discussion meeting including a prayer meeting has been organized at the party office organized by the Upazila Awami League.
