US Ambassador’s concern over political violence in Dhaka

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas has expressed concern over the ongoing political violence in the capital Dhaka.

The US ambassador expressed this concern in a statement on Thursday evening.

In a statement, Peter Haas said, “We are concerned by reports of intimidation and political violence in Dhaka.” Calling on all to respect the rule of law and refrain from violence, harassment and intimidation.

At the same time, the US Embassy has expressed its condolences to the families of the victims of the clash between the party’s leaders and activists in front of the BNP’s central office in Nayapaltan. The statement said, the US Embassy is expressing its condolences to the families of those killed and injured in Dhaka yesterday (Wednesday).

We encourage the government to investigate these reports of violence and protect fundamental freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, the statement added.

Incidentally, on Wednesday afternoon, police and law enforcement officers clashed with BNP leaders and activists in front of the BNP office in Nayapaltan of the capital. A large number of BNP leaders and activists including several policemen were injured. One person died in this incident.

Meanwhile, after the clash, the police arrested more than four hundred workers including several central leaders of BNP. Apart from this, since the incident, the law and order forces have conducted extensive searches at the BNP office.
