Two ethnic groups clash in Sudan: 150 killed

In Sudan’s southern Blue Nile state, two ethnic minorities have clashed over a land dispute. At least 150 people were killed and 86 others were injured.

Abbas Musa, the head of the local Wad Al-Mahi hospital, said that women and children and even the elderly were among those killed in the two days of clashes last Wednesday and Thursday.

He also said that 86 people were injured in the violence.

It is known that the conflict between the people of another group started last week due to a dispute over land with the Hausa ethnic group. Many of the residents of this area have fled their homes in fear due to gunfights and burning of houses. The epicenter of the conflict is in the Wad al-Mahi area near Rozaires, 500 kilometers (310 miles) south of the capital Khartoum.

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Damazin on Thursday and demanded the resignation of the regional governor. They also mentioned that they do not want violence.

Eddie Roe, head of the UN aid program in Sudan, said he was “deeply concerned”. He said that 170 people have been killed and 327 injured since the start of the conflict on October 13.

In early October, 149 people were killed in clashes between ethnic minorities that began last July. Last week, 13 more people were killed in renewed fighting, according to the UN aid agency (OCHA).
