Locals have arrested a man involved in the incident of firing at police in the Meghna River near the police camp in Guagachia, Gazaria Upazila, Munshiganj and handed him over to the police. He was sent to court on Monday (September 1) afternoon. Earlier, on Sunday night, locals arrested him and handed him over to the police. The arrested person has been identified as Khokon (40). He is said to be the son of the deceased Abul Miah of Shimulia village in Guagachia union. According to sources from Gazaria Police Station, the arrested Khokon is a known arms dealer and an active member of the Nayan-Piyas group of naval robbers. When the recent incident of the force’s firing on police created a nationwide uproar, force chief Nayan and second-in-command Piyas went into hiding. Meanwhile, on Sunday night, the crowd saw Khokon in the area and arrested him. He was later handed over to the police. Confirming the incident, Gazaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Anwar Alam Azad said, “He is involved in the shooting incident with the police. There is also a warrant against him in another case under the Arms Act.” Incidentally, on August 25, members of the Nayan-Piyas group of boat robbers fired more than a hundred rounds of gunfire and exploded 4/5 cocktails in the river adjacent to the newly opened temporary police camp in Jamalpur village of Guagachia Union in Gazaria Upazila of Munshiganj. When the matter created a nationwide stir, law enforcement agencies took action to arrest those involved. RAB conducted raids in Dhaka and Gazipur and arrested three people involved in the incident, including Nayan’s older brother Ripon.
