Secretary General of the party Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed concern over the fact that BNP leaders and activists have been arrested in old cases despite being granted bail despite ignoring the instructions of the High Court.

In a statement signed by Taiful Islam Tipu, Joint Office Secretary of BNP on Thursday (August 10), BNP Secretary General said that keeping BNP leaders and activists in jail by showing their arrest in old cases is completely inhumane and politically vindictive. To suppress the democratic movement of the opposition parties including BNP, the government is continuously setting such despicable examples.

He said, the fascist ruling group is making unsuccessful efforts to eliminate the opposition parties, disoriented by the massive influx of people on the streets against the terrible misrule of the government, including people’s right to vote and freedom of expression. But power cannot be sustained by attacking, shooting, arresting, torturing and imprisoning activists. Rather, the government along with the law enforcement agencies must be held accountable for the illegal activities.

Mirza Fakhrul said that almost all the political parties of Bangladesh, conscious civil society, human rights organizations and international rights groups have spoken against the oppression of the current government. In the face of people’s movement, the government will fall and the democratic government will be established through the elections under the non-partisan neutral government during the elections.

The leaders whose names have been mentioned in the statement are – BNP Trade Affairs Secretary and former MP Salah Uddin Ahmed, BNP Central Joint Organizing Secretary (Barisal Division) Akon Quddusur Rahman, National Executive Committee Joint Relief Affairs Secretary Shafiqul Haque Milan, National Executive Committee Member and Rajshahi District BNP Convener Abu Saeed Chand, Comilla Metropolitan BNP Convenor Udbatul Bari Abu, Gazipur Metropolitan BNP President Shaukat Hossain Sarkar, Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP Member Secretary Rafiqul Alam Majnu, Bogra District BNP General Secretary Ali Azgar Hena, Nilphamari District BNP General Secretary Zahurul Islam, member secretary of Feni district BNP Alal Uddin Alal, joint convener Yakub Nabi and former president of Bagerhat district BNP Abdus Salam.

Also, the BNP Secretary General expressed deep concern over these incidents, alleging that numerous leaders and activists were illegally imprisoned in false and absentee cases. He immediately called for unconditional release of all jailed opposition party leaders and withdrawal of false cases.

In another statement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir strongly condemned and protested the arrest of Sadar Upazila BNP convener Fazlur Rahman Bakul of Feni district. BNP Secretary General expressed deep concern in this incident and strongly demanded his unconditional release immediately.
