Awami League nominated mayor candidate in Sylhet City Corporation election. A writ has been filed regarding the validity of Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury’s candidature. The writ was filed in the concerned division of the High Court on Tuesday.
AKM Abu Huraira (Saju), a resident of Sylhet City Corporation, filed the writ seeking directions to cancel his candidature, claiming that Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury has given false information in the affidavit filed with the Election Commission. As per the schedule, polling for Sylhet city elections will be held on Wednesday.
According to the writ petitioner, Abu Huraira applied to the returning officer on June 12 to take necessary measures including canceling the candidature of Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury due to giving false information in the affidavit. He sent a legal notice to the Chief Election Commissioner on June 19 requesting to take action in this regard within 24 hours. Hurraya did the writ if it didn’t work.
Huraira’s lawyer Khawaja Tanveer Ahmed said, “Anowaruzzaman Chowdhury has mentioned his date of birth on June 1, 1970 in his affidavit. But his date of birth in his SSC exam certificate is 1st June 1972. There is a discrepancy between the date of birth mentioned in the SSC certificate and the date of birth given in the affidavit. He mentions “BA (Hons) Business” in educational qualification. But there is no such degree. He did not attach the certified copy of this certificate to the affidavit. Whereas as per Local Government (City Corporation) Rules, the attested copy of the highest educational qualification must be attached with the affidavit. And if false information is given in the affidavit, the returning officer can take necessary action including canceling the candidature after investigation. The writ is made by highlighting these aspects. The High Court bench headed by Justice Zafar Ahmed may hear the writ on Wednesday.
