“I will sit in Dhaka and observe the situation of Sylhet City Election Center”

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said that he will sit in Dhaka and monitor the situation of all Sylhet city election centers through CCTV. If a voter cannot vote correctly, you will shout. We will take action from there. CEC said, ‘Candidature will be canceled if there is complaint of code of conduct. You will not do anything that will invalidate the candidature.’

He said these things in an exchange meeting with the candidates in the Sylhet city elections at the Jalalabad Gas Auditorium in Mendibagh of the city on Saturday afternoon.

Calling for building a culture of compliance with electoral code of conduct, CEC said, ‘We understand that many people spend invisible expenses. But we cannot take action as there is no evidence. If you can provide proper evidence, we will take action accordingly.’

CEC said in the discussion meeting, ‘One cannot vote for another in any way. If anyone can prove such a fact then I will take responsibility for it myself. So you will go to the polling station on time and vote.’

The Chief Election Commissioner said, ‘We cannot be so cruel.’ There are laws about it. The police can tear down the polythene-wrapped banners and posters. And this is a global problem. So everyone should be aware. Especially thinking about our future generations we should avoid polythene.’

Kazi Habibul Awal said about the campaign, ‘The type of campaign may change in the future. It will take time. IT will add to it. Candidates will campaign on social media. So we have to think – how to bring other forms of campaign in the future.’

In response to a question from journalists, CEC said, ‘There are policies for issuing cards to journalists for election monitoring. According to the policy, those who are not authorized will not get the pass card.

When asked about the weapons drill in Ward No. 7, the CEC said, ‘A case has been filed in this incident. A few people have been arrested.

Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet. Muhammed Mosharraf Hossain chaired the exchange meeting attended by the Secretary of the Election Commission. Jahangir Alam, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ilyach Sharif, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner. Mujibur Rahman, Sylhet Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun, Sylhet Regional Election Officer and City Corporation Election Returning Officer Faisal Quader, Awami League candidate Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Jatiya Party candidate Nazrul Islam Babul, Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Hafez Maulana Mahmudul Hasan and other mayoral candidates, councilors and Women council candidates from reserved wards were present.

It should be noted that 8 people are fighting for the post of mayor in the Sylhet city election. 360 candidates are contesting for the councilor post. Out of this 273 women candidates are contesting in general wards and 87 in reserved wards (women councillors). Voting will be held on June 21. This is the first time that votes will be taken through Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
