A roundtable discussion on climate change, disaster risk reduction, and internal migration was held at the Upazila Hall Room on Monday (November 18) at 10:30 am with the financial support of Caritas Germany and BMZ through the project “Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation (DRR & CCA) in High-Risk Areas of Khulna and Satkhira Districts of Bangladesh”.

The meeting was chaired by
Upazila Executive Officer Ruli Biswas. The keynote speaker at the meeting was Dr. Md. Ismail Hossain, Assistant Professor of the Disaster Management Institute of Khulna University of Engineering.  In addition, various officials of the government departments of Koyra Upazila, members of the Union and Ward Disaster Management Committees, CPP members, civil society, journalists, NGO representatives, representatives of local displaced people were present. Also present were Project Coordinator Pavitra Kumar Mondal, DRR and CCA Project Coordinator of Caritas Khulna Region Md. Ibrahim Hosne.

The president of the program, Upazila Executive Officer Ruli Biswas, said, “The level of various disasters due to climate change is increasing every year. Due to the accumulation of sediment in rivers, the sea level is increasing and the rivers are overflowing, flooding vast areas. As a result, people are becoming helpless due to the breach of embankments. As a result, the number of internal migrations is increasing day by day. For this, alternative employment arrangements need to be made. He also said, this kind of program is the first for this upazila, so I will try to present your well-thought-out opinions on today’s program to the higher authorities so that they can be included in the next five-year plan and play a helpful role in reducing the impact of climate change.”

As a keynote speaker, Dr. Md. Ismail Hossain said, human society is mainly responsible for climate change. All animals and biodiversity are being severely affected due to humans. Due to deforestation, factories, vehicles, etc., the amount of carbon dioxide is increasing and the amount of oxygen is decreasing.  To prevent this environmental disaster, we need to plant more trees.
