A Chhatra League leader named Mo Shakeel Sardar (25) has been arrested by the police on charges of gang rape of two young women in Bagerhat’s Fakirhat.
Shakeel was arrested from Jaria area of Fakirhat on Sunday (January 15) evening. Earlier, the victim, a young woman (21), filed a case against two accused in Fakirhat police station. Another accused Mehdi Hasan (20) is absconding.
The arrested Shakil Sardar is the son of Mostab Sardar of Jaria-Chaumatha area of Fakirhat Upazila. He is Fakirhat Sadar Union Chhatra League President. Another accused, Mehdi Hasan, is the son of Sikh Masum Haque of the same area.
According to the complaint of the case, on Saturday (January 13) afternoon, two girlfriends, cousins and a friend went for a visit to the Rampal thermal power plant. Shakil Sardar stopped them on their way back and pulled the veil of a young woman. The young woman and her friend fell from the motorcycle on the road.
Later they were raped in turn.
Fakirhat Police Station OC Mo Ashraful Alam said that 2 young women who were raped were rescued after receiving a call to 999. Their medical examination was completed at Khulna Medical College Hospital.
