Bus burning in Jatrabari: 109 BNP activists accused

A Sub-Inspector (SI) of Police filed a case as a plaintiff in the incident of burning a Swadesh Paribahan bus at Jatrabari in the capital on Saturday night. 109 leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations have been accused in this case filed at Jatrabari police station.

According to the statement of the case, the leaders and activists of BNP took out a protest procession on Saturday at approximately 12:30 noon at Matuail under Jatrabari police station and brought indigenous weapons, bricks, bamboo sticks and cocktails on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. There they started chanting anti-government slogans. They created obstructions on the roads, stopped the traffic and caused great suffering to the people and attacked the police. At this time a Swadesh Paribahan bus was set on fire.

Meanwhile, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said as many as 700 people have been detained in connection with Saturday’s violence. After a meeting at the secretariat on Sunday, he said in response to the questions of journalists, “If anyone is detained who was not involved in the violence, they will be released from the police station.” However, the home minister does not yet know the exact number of those arrested on Saturday who have been sent to court.

BNP held a mass meeting in Dhaka last Friday. Later on Saturday, the sit-in program was held at the entrances of the capital. BNP leaders and activists clashed with the police in at least five places on the basis of this program.

On the other hand, on Saturday, the leaders and activists of the ruling Awami League and its affiliated organizations also clashed with batons in some places in the name of ‘Satark Paharar’. Many people were injured in the clash. Many activists of BNP were detained or arrested.
