A colorful rally and discussion meeting were organized by the District Administration and the District Social Services Office, Mymensingh, to mark the observance of World White Cane Day 2026. Although the discussion meeting was originally scheduled to be held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, it was held in the hall of the District Social Services Office due to unavoidable circumstances. The discussion meeting was attended by Mr. Md. Saifur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner of Mymensingh, as the Chief Guest. Mr. Mohammad Kamrul Hasan, Superintendent of Police, Mymensingh, and Dr. Mohammad Fakhrul Hasan Chowdhury, Civil Surgeon, Mymensingh, attended as Special Guests. The meeting was presided over by Ms. Shamsur Nahar, Director, Divisional Social Services Office, Mymensingh. A welcome address was delivered by Tamalika Chakraborty, Disability Affairs Officer. Focusing on this year’s theme, “Where vision is limited, potential is limitless,” the speakers stated that ‘World White Cane Safety Day’ is being observed this year, as in previous years, to convey the message of ensuring independent mobility, safety, and rights for visually impaired individuals. The primary objective of this day is to build social awareness so that visually impaired people can navigate independently without any hindrances, just like any other member of society.

In his speech, Mr. Raju Ahmed, Deputy Director of the District Social Services Office, Mymensingh, said that for the visually impaired, the white cane is not merely an ordinary walking stick; it is a symbol of their reliance, self-reliance, and dignity. The white cane serves as their greatest companion in navigating busy roads or crowded places safely on their own. The significance of this day is immense in raising social awareness so that drivers and pedestrians become cautious upon seeing a white cane on the road and extend necessary cooperation.
He further noted, referring to information provided by Mr. Jahir Raihan and Mr. Zakaria from Dr. K Zaman BNSB Eye Hospital, Mymensingh and Sightsavers, that except for congenital blindness, most cases of curable blindness can be successfully treated with proper medical care. In his remarks—as well as in the Chief Guest’s address—high praise was extended to Dr. K Zaman, BNSB Eye Hospital, Mymensingh. Later, white canes and quality light refreshments were distributed among the visually impaired individuals present at the event.
In 1964, October 15 was first declared as ‘White Cane Safety Day’ in the United States to highlight the rights and self-reliance of visually impaired people. Subsequently, the day gained international recognition. Since then, the day has been observed in Bangladesh and around the world through various government and non-government initiatives, including rallies, white cane distribution, discussion meetings, and awareness programs. According to experts, the significance of this day should not remain confined to programs on a single occasion. The core pledge of the day should be to make sidewalks barrier-free for visually impaired individuals, ensure accessible facilities in public transport, and guarantee their full inclusion in society and the workplace.
