Residents of Jamalpur city suffer from waterlogging even with a little rain. A cleaning program has been started by volunteers on a personal initiative to restore the normal flow of all canals, including the Gobakhali canal, which is filled with garbage and sewage. The Baniabazar canal cleaning program was inaugurated in the city’s Baniabazar area on Tuesday (July 28) afternoon. Earlier, volunteers have been cleaning the Gobakhali canal for 16 days on the initiative of District Jubo Dal Member Secretary Sohel Rana Khan.
Local volunteers and people from different classes and professions participated in this program. Locals said that the canals have been filled with garbage and sewage for a long time, obstructing the flow of water. As a result, waterlogging occurs in different areas of the city even with a little rain. During heavy rains, water rises in the houses of the city. They believe that if the normal flow of the canal is restored with proper planning, the waterlogging of the city will be reduced to a great extent during the monsoon season.
In this regard, Jamalpur Municipality mayoral candidate Sohel Rana Khan, who initiated the initiative, said that the residents of Jamalpur city suffer from waterlogging every year due to the dirtiness of these canals. But no effective initiative has been taken to clean the canals for a long time. So, I was forced to start cleaning the canal on my own initiative. Prime Minister has undertaken a program to dig canals. If we also keep the canals clean and functional, it will be possible to reduce the waterlogging of the city to a great extent.
