Speech- and Hearing-Impaired Woman Raped in Purbadhala, Netrokona

A case has been filed against the son of a local Union Parishad (UP) member on charges of rape in Purbadhala. The victim’s father filed the case at Purbadhala Police Station on Friday night (September 25), ten days after the incident occurred. The accused youth is Md. Awal, alias Robin (24), son of Kamal Uddin Talukdar (known as Kamal Member), a member of the local Khalishaur Union Parishad.
According to the case complaint and local sources, on the afternoon of September 16, the accused, Robin, beckoned the victim—who is speech- and hearing-impaired—using gestures, took her into an empty room, and raped her. Subsequently, a local woman discovered the situation, rescued the victim, and returned her to her family; the victim then conveyed the details of the incident to her relatives through gestures. The victim’s family alleged that there were initial attempts to suppress the matter through pressure—as the accused belongs to an influential family—which caused a delay in taking legal action.
Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Purbadhala Police Station, stated that the case was registered immediately upon receipt of the complaint, and the victim was sent to Netrokona Modern Hospital for a medical examination. He added that the accused, Robin, has been on the run since the incident, and police operations to arrest him are ongoing.
