The incident occurred near the Munshibari Stand area in Chakamaiya Union, Kalapara Upazila, Patuakhali. On Saturday (August 26) around 8 PM, a seven-month pregnant woman was beaten and kicked in the abdomen. She was subsequently taken to the hospital in critical condition. She gave birth to a newborn, who passed away.

According to the family and eyewitnesses, while Tania was being taken to a doctor, an altercation broke out between her husband, Habib Akon, and several individuals over making way for a vehicle near the Munshibari Stand area. At one point, a group—including Sohag (30), Al-Mamun (26), and Shaon (40)—assaulted Habib. The family claims that when Tania stepped forward to protect her husband, she too was beaten and kicked in the abdomen.

Family members further alleged that following the incident, Tania and her husband were prevented from going to the hospital for medical treatment for nearly two hours. Later, through the intervention of local dignitaries, they were taken to Kalapara Upazila Hospital. There, Tania gave birth to a newborn. The newborn passed away shortly thereafter.

Tania’s father, Dulal Howlader, stated that Sohag, Al-Mamun, and Shaon had beaten and injured his daughter and son-in-law. He demanded a proper investigation into the incident and legal action against those involved.

Tania’s husband, Habib Akon, said, “They beat both my wife and me and obstructed us from seeking medical treatment.” “My wife was seven months pregnant.” “My child died before ever seeing the light of day. I seek justice for this incident.” The doctor on duty at the Kalapara Upazila Health Complex stated that Tania gave birth after being brought to the hospital.

The newborn was breathing and was administered oxygen for a while, but subsequently passed away. However, Tania’s physical condition is currently stable following medical treatment. Md. Mojibor Fakir, Chairman of the Chakamaiya Union Parishad, condemned the incident, describing it as unfortunate. He also demanded a proper investigation into the matter and called for legal action.

Regarding the incident, Nazrul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kalapara Police Station, said that police were dispatched to the hospital upon receiving the news. He added that legal action would be taken following an investigation once a written complaint is received.
