A tree does not merely spread its roots into the soil; intertwined with those roots are the foundations of humanity’s future, biodiversity, and the planet’s safe existence. Driven by this realization and the motto “Live in Green, Build in Green—Let the Future World Belong to Everyone,” a tree plantation program was held on the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) campus. On Thursday morning (September 10), Professor Dr. G.M. Mujibur Rahman—Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Advisor to Students’ Welfare at BAU—inaugurated this Mymensingh divisional program organized by the organization ‘Sobuj Prithibi’.

In his inaugural address, he stated that tree plantation should not be viewed merely as a one-day ceremonial event. One must also take responsibility for ensuring the survival of the tree after planting it. Given the current reality of climate change, individuals, institutions, and social organizations must work in a coordinated manner to protect the environment. Planting a tree means making the earth a slightly more habitable place for future generations.

The true success of tree plantation does not depend solely on the number of saplings planted; rather, what matters is how many trees survive in the long run and play a positive role in the environment. To this end, he emphasized the importance of regular care and preservation alongside planned tree plantation. Speakers at the event noted that effective social initiatives are urgently needed to tackle challenges such as rapid urbanization, indiscriminate deforestation, rising temperatures, climate change, and the crisis facing biodiversity.

Sahid Mahmud, the founder and executive director of ‘Sobuj Prithibi’ and the event’s chair, stated that the organization plans to conduct continuous tree plantation, tree preservation, and environmental awareness activities across the Mymensingh division. He expressed the hope that this initiative, which began with a single sapling, would eventually evolve into a broader social movement.

BAU Associate Professor Dr. Sharmin Akter and Deputy Registrar Dr. Md. Jahirul Alam, along with other university faculty and officials and field-level officers from the Mymensingh Region Tourist Police, were present and assisted in implementing the tree plantation program.
