Allegations of medical negligence have been raised in the death of a young man named Ashraful Alam (31) after undergoing tonsil surgery at Islami Bank Community Hospital in Rangpur. The deceased Ashraful is a resident of Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh and is a father of one child. His family has demanded an impartial investigation into the incident, finding out the real cause of death and taking legal action against those responsible. Family members alleged that Ashraful was admitted to the hospital for tonsil surgery on July 22.
On the same evening, Dr. Anwarul Rahman Anon, a doctor from the ear, nose and throat department, performed his surgery. When his physical condition suddenly deteriorated during the surgery, he was quickly taken to Rangpur Community Hospital. The doctor on duty there declared him dead. The deceased’s wife told reporters that although treatment was taken as per the advice of the hospital authorities, complications arose during the surgery.
She claims that her husband died due to excessive bleeding and lack of timely and effective treatment. She alleges that an attempt is being made to hide the true facts of the incident. However, the relevant anesthesia doctor, Dr. Mohammad Hossain, has denied the allegations of medical negligence. He claims that the patient suffered a sudden heart attack during the surgery. Later, he was transferred to another hospital for better treatment, but died while undergoing treatment there.
Hospital in-charge Nuruzzaman also denied the allegations of negligence, saying that the patient came to the hospital through an acquaintance. The cause of death can only be confirmed through an investigation. Meanwhile, despite repeated attempts to contact the surgeon, Dr. Anwarul Rahman Anon, his statement could not be obtained. Questions have also been raised about the hospital’s license renewal after the incident.
The hospital authorities said that the license renewal is being delayed due to several administrative processes, including those with the Department of Environment, not being completed. However, those concerned believe that the matter needs to be verified through the relevant government authorities. Meanwhile, some journalists and relatives of the deceased have also alleged obstruction and threats in publishing news.
The family of the deceased, local conscious circles and concerned parties have demanded an impartial investigation of the incident through the Department of Health and the district administration, reviewing the medical records of the surgery, anesthesia records, referral process and autopsy reports to uncover the real cause of death.
