The police have solved the mystery of the body of a newborn found tied with bricks from the Kalihar River in Purbadhala. Purbadhala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdullah Al Mamun said in a press release sent to various print and electronic media outlets working in Netrakona on Tuesday afternoon that on June 29, around 11:15 am, local residents saw a newborn’s body floating in the Kalihar River in the Kaliharkanda area of Hogla Union in Purbadhala Upazila and informed the police.
Police reached the spot and recovered the body of a newborn girl tied to a brick with a plastic rope and wrapped in a black shirt. In this incident, Purbadhala Police Station SI Md. Faruk Khan filed a case with the police station under the relevant section of the Penal Code.
After filing the case, the Purbadhola Police Station-Police launched an investigation under the direction of Netrokona Superintendent of Police Md. Tariqul Islam and Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Swajal Kumar Sarkar. After analyzing the information obtained during the investigation, the suspect Sajan Mia was arrested with the help of modern information technology on Tuesday morning.
The arrested Sajan Mia is the son of Abdul Hamid of Kona Kalihar (Maizpara) village in Purbadhola upazila. He is a farmer by profession. After Sajan Mia was arrested, the main secret of the incident came out through extensive interrogation. Sajan Mia raped a 12-year-old girl, his neighbor, and she became pregnant.
Fearing social shame and the rapist’s continued threat to kill her, the impoverished victim’s family tried to keep the matter a secret so that people around them would not know.
The press release mentioned that the newborn’s body was wrapped in a black shirt, tied with bricks and drowned in the river, as Sajan Mia, who had given birth to a stillborn baby girl, told the press.
