The monthly meeting of the Mymensingh District Law and Order Committee was held. The meeting took place on Sunday (September 13) at the conference room of the Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner. Mymensingh Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md. Saifur Rahman presided over the meeting.

Mufti Muhammadullah, Member of Parliament (MP) for the Mymensingh-2 (Phulpur-Tarakanda) constituency and an advisor to the committee, urged law enforcement agencies, government officials, public representatives, and all concerned stakeholders to diligently perform their respective duties in order to build a drug-free and peaceful society.

He stated that problems cannot be solved merely through meetings and discussions; effective steps must be taken to implement decisions. Crime can be largely kept under control if those in positions of responsibility perform their duties properly. The MP emphasized that those concerned must play a more active and responsible role, particularly regarding the law and order situation and drug control in the Phulpur and Tarakanda police station areas.

In his remarks as the chair, the Deputy Commissioner stated that alongside the administration, people from various walks of life must be involved in maintaining law and order. While anti-drug volunteer committees should be encouraged, they must also be cautioned against taking the law into their own hands. He noted that drug users and traffickers operate as an organized syndicate.

There is a risk that individuals who assist the administration with information regarding drugs could face harassment or retaliation from that syndicate. Therefore, the administration and police must remain vigilant to ensure the safety of those involved in anti-drug efforts. Otherwise, if people become victims of false cases or harassment while trying to help with this good cause, they will become discouraged.

He further added that it is difficult to effectively control the various social crimes committed by hundreds of thousands of people using only a limited number of police personnel at a single station. For this reason, there is no alternative to involving the community in maintaining law and order. Various social committees and “beat policing” activities have already been activated in several upazilas, including Muktagacha, Phulbaria, Haluaghat, and Dhobaura.

These committees and beat policing activities need to be further activated in the other upazilas as well. Regarding the fertilizer crisis, the Deputy Commissioner stated that the situation must be strictly monitored to determine if the shortage is being artificially created. No one should be allowed the opportunity for black marketing or illegal hoarding.

Attendees at the meeting included Mymensingh District’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime & Ops) Md. Ashraful Karim and Civil Surgeon Dr. Mohammad Fakhrul Hasan Chowdhury, alongside members of the District Law and Order Committee, senior officials from various law enforcement agencies, Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) from various upazilas of Mymensingh district, and heads of various government departments.
