A meeting was held in Pirganj, Thakurgaon, with stakeholders related to livestock to prevent ‘anti-microbial resistance (AMR). The meeting was held on September 2 at the initiative of the Upazila Livestock Department in Saidpur Union. It was presided over by Vivekananda Roy Nimai, Chairman of Saidpur Union Parishad. Pirganj Upazila Livestock Officer Dr. Jahangir Alam was present as the chief guest at the meeting. In his speech as the chief guest, Dr. Jahangir Alam said that the livestock sector is playing an important role in the country’s economy, food and nutritional security. However, due to the excessive and irregular use of antibiotics, harmful microbes are developing resistance to the drugs. T

his creates the risk of drugs not being effective in treating common diseases, which is a serious threat to human health as well as animals and birds. He emphasized the importance of not using antibiotics without the advice of a registered veterinarian to prevent AMR, completing the course of medication correctly, adhering to the prescribed withdrawal period, stopping the misuse of antibiotics as growth promoters, and strengthening biosecurity and management on farms. At that time, he said, “Medicines in the right way when needed, not unnecessary antibiotics” – by implementing this slogan, everyone must play a responsible role in preventing AMR.

Livestock Extension Officer Dr. Sanjid Hasan moderated the meeting, and other speakers included Saidpur Union BNP President Ziarul Islam, General Secretary Rafiqul Islam, VS Dr. Md. Ramzan Ali, Deputy Assistant Livestock Officer (Animal Health) SA Azam and Deputy Assistant Livestock Officer (Artificial Reproduction) Md. Mokaram Hossain, Deputy Assistant Officer Md. Paygam Ali (AI) and other concerned officials and stakeholders of the Livestock Department. The meeting emphasized on ensuring the proper use of antibiotics in the livestock sector and increasing public awareness to combat the risk of AMR.
