With the theme “Let’s start from home and build a disaster-resilient nation,” the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction was observed in the Uria and Kanchipara unions of Phulchhari Upazila, Gaibandha. On Tuesday (October 13), colorful rallies were organized in both unions to mark the occasion under the PROOFS project, implemented by Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK). Public representatives, local dignitaries, community-level volunteers, and people from various walks of life participated in the rallies.

The Chairman and local members of the Uria Union Parishad participated in the rally and highlighted the importance of raising public awareness and undertaking collective initiatives to tackle disasters and reduce disaster risks. The organizers stated that it is essential for every level of society—starting from the family—to take preparatory measures to minimize disaster-related losses. Awareness regarding early warnings, seeking safe shelter, making necessary preparations, and fostering cooperation play a crucial role in tackling natural disasters such as floods, river erosion, and cyclones.

Through GUK’s PROOFS project, various activities are being implemented to address climate change risks, reduce disaster losses, and enhance the capacity of local communities. Those involved expressed hope that this observance of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction would further strengthen disaster awareness and collective action at the local level.
