The country’s leading journalist leaders have called for maintaining the trust of the people through objective and ethical journalism without bowing to evil forces. They said that the defeat of the media means the defeat of the people, and the defeat of the people means the defeat of the state. Therefore, journalists must play a more responsible and sensitive role in protecting child rights and eliminating social inequalities.
The speakers said these things at a day-long workshop on ‘Basic Journalism and Ethical Reporting’ organized at the Bhawal Convention Hall of the Gazipur District Administration on Sunday (August 2). About 80 representatives of print, electronic and online media working in the district participated in the workshop, organized jointly by the district administration and World Vision Bangladesh.
The workshop, conducted by National Press Club General Secretary Ayub Bhuiyan, featured keynote speakers and guests, including Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief Md. Kamal Uddin Sabuj, Government Chief Information Officer Abdal Ahmed, National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, BFUJ Secretary General Quader Gani Chowdhury and DUJ President Md. Shahidul Islam.
The training session covered in detail the prevention of child labor and child marriage, fact-checking, protecting the dignity of victims and institutional strategies for presenting sensitive news. At the same time, the discussants emphasized on holding those in power accountable while maintaining honesty and impartiality. At the beginning of the workshop, Press Club President Hasan Hafiz presented the associate membership certificate of the National Press Club to Gazipur Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Md. Nurul Karim Bhuiyan in a special honoring session.
The District Commissioner, who was emotional upon receiving the award, said in his speech, “This rare honor will show me the way to work more responsibly in the public interest.” ” A short documentary on three humanitarian activities under the district administration’s ‘Good People for Good Work’ program was also screened at the event. The organizers promised to continue such joint initiatives in the future for the professional development and social protection of journalists.
