A human chain was organized to demand the immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible for the murder of journalist Lutfuzzaman Alif Fakir, a former army member. The event took place on Thursday (October 22) on the road in front of the Netrokona District Press Club.
Organized by the district branch of the Rural Journalist Foundation (RJF), the hour-long human chain was presided over by the organization’s district president, Sujadul Islam Faras, and moderated by general secretary Ershadul Haque Johnny. Key speakers included S. M. Zahirul Islam, chairman of the organization’s central committee; Zahid Hasan, vice-president of the Press Club; former vice-president and freedom fighter Haidar Jahan Chowdhury; and former secretaries Shyamlendu Pal and M. M. Mukhleshur Rahman Khan. Journalists from various print and electronic media outlets in the district were also in attendance.
It should be noted that journalist Alif was shot and killed on the night of October 15. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident so far. Meanwhile, Alif’s wife, Anandita Sangma, has filed a case at the Durgapur Police Station against eight unidentified individuals in connection with his murder. Speakers at the human chain demanded the swift arrest of those involved in the killing and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. They also urged that no innocent individuals be arrested.
