Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) felicitated and congratulated two distinguished scientists, Professor Dr. Zahurul Karim and Professor Dr. M. A. Rahim, who were awarded the Swadhinata Award for 2026 in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the advancement of education, science and research in the country.
On Monday (June 29), floral greetings and commemorative mementos were presented to the two distinguished personalities at a program organized at the old auditorium of the university. Gazipur Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. GKM Mostafizur Rahman presided over the program, which was attended by former Chairman of Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) Professor Dr. Z. N. Tahmida Begum, University Registrar Md. Abdullah Mridha, Treasurer Professor Dr. Md. Shafiul Islam Afrad, among others.
At the beginning of the ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor greeted the two Independence Award-winning scientists with flowers. Later, he presented them with a commemorative crest on behalf of the university. Section Officer of the Public Relations Department of Gazipur Agricultural University Md. Roni Islam Bolen, Professor Dr. Z. A. Karim is one of the pioneers of climate change research in Bangladesh. His research has played an important role in identifying ferrihydrite minerals in paddy field soil, preparing the country’s first drought intensity map, and effectively solving the mango problem in the northern region.
Based on his research, short-duration rice varieties have been developed and it has been possible to prepare a map and classification of the country’s salinity. In recognition of these unique contributions, he was previously awarded the International Yuzhu Medal. On the other hand, former professor of Bangladesh Agricultural University Dr. M. A. Rahim is a bright name in fruit research in Bangladesh.
Under his leadership, 128 new fruit varieties have been developed, of which ‘BU Cool’ is particularly popular. He is one of the founders of the BU Germplasm Center of Bangladesh Agricultural University.
This center is currently recognized as the largest collection of fruits, medicinal plants and agro-forestry in the country and the second largest germplasm collection in the world.
