Agreement signed to install an 8.42 MW rooftop solar power plant. Chittagong Port to become a ‘Green Port’.

This information was conveyed in a press release issued today, October 19, and signed by Port Secretary Refayet Hamim.

Taking a historic step towards building environmentally friendly and sustainable port management, the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has signed an agreement to install a state-of-the-art rooftop solar power plant with a peak capacity of 8.42 Megawatts (MWp) on the unused roofs of various buildings and sheds at Chittagong Port under the ‘Green Port Initiative’.

Today this agreement was signed between the Chittagong Port Authority and Greener Garments Initiative Limited (GGI). The agreement was signed by CPA Chairman Rear Admiral S M Moniruzzaman on behalf of Chittagong Port and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mohammad Nure Alam on behalf of GGI.

20 years of electricity without upfront financing, saving BDT 100 crore.
In compliance with Bangladesh government guidelines, GGI will implement the project following an Operating-Expense (OpEx) model funded entirely by private investment. Consequently, the Chittagong Port Authority does not have to make any initial capital investment or financing to establish this power plant.

Free Installation and Maintenance: The vendor organization, GGI, will bear all costs and responsibilities for the project’s design, procurement, construction, operation, and maintenance.

CPA will purchase the generated electricity at a fixed tariff rate specified in the agreement.

Uninterrupted Electricity and Long-Term Savings: Uninterrupted solar power will be supplied to Chittagong Port for 20 consecutive years from the commercial production date. It is estimated that using this solar energy will save the port nearly BDT 100 crore in electricity bills over the next 20 years.

Pressure on the national grid will ease, carbon credits will be earned.
With the launch of this Green Initiative, Chittagong Port will gain an alternative and eco-friendly power source, significantly reducing electricity demand on the national grid. Furthermore, by prioritizing renewable energy and aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement, this contract will play a vital role in earning carbon credits. In the future, the project will be connected to the national grid via a net metering system, enabling any surplus electricity generated to be supplied to the national grid.

A bright example of sustainable port management
The Chittagong Port Authority believes that, alongside environmental protection and financial gains, this initiative will establish Chittagong Port as a world-class, exemplary ‘Green Port’—reducing greenhouse gas and carbon emissions while remaining a driving force of the country’s economy.
