Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) held a protest demanding the safety and dignity of migrant workers, while also condemning the death sentences handed down to Bangladeshi expatriates Nazrul Islam and Sweety Akter in Saudi Arabia.

Party leaders criticized the government’s stance, citing the neglect of expatriates, the abuse they face abroad, and the harassment they encounter at airports upon returning home. They demanded an investigation into the true circumstances surrounding the death sentences of the two Bangladeshis and called for initiatives to secure the release of other Bangladeshi nationals currently held in foreign prisons.

The protest took place on Thursday (October 22) in front of the National Press Club, under the banner of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB).

Speakers at the event demanded that the actual reasons behind the death sentences of the two Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia be disclosed, calling for a thorough investigation, the prosecution of those responsible, and the assurance of safety and dignity for all migrant workers.

Speaking at the event, CPB General Secretary Abdullah Kafi Ratan stated that the Bangladesh government has failed to uncover the true circumstances behind the case. He alleged that although the Jeddah Consulate was informed about the situation involving Nazrul and Sweety, the matter was not given the attention it deserved.

He noted that while Bangladeshi expatriates make a vital contribution to the national economy through their labor abroad, the government has failed to play an effective role in protecting their safety and rights. Although they are valued as a source of remittances, they are not accorded the respect they deserve. Upon returning home, they are frequently harassed at airports—their luggage is tampered with, belongings are stolen, and items brought for their families are confiscated. He urged the government to ensure that embassies and labor counselors play an effective role in safeguarding the interests of migrant workers abroad.

Ragib Hasan Munna, a central CPB leader and former Vice President of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RAKSU), pointed out that due to a lack of employment opportunities at home, many young people are forced to sell their land and assets to go abroad. Even though the remittances they send keep the wheels of the national economy turning, these migrant workers continue to face abuse and discrimination abroad. He alleged that the government has failed to lodge effective protests against incidents such as the abuse of female migrant workers abroad and the execution of Bangladeshi nationals. Furthermore, no adequate initiatives are being taken to secure the release of Bangladeshis imprisoned in various countries and bring them back home.

Ragib Munna stated that although a political shift occurred following the uprising on July 24, the system has not changed in line with the expectations of the general public. He warned that if the rights and safety of migrant workers are not ensured, a movement will be launched with the participation of the people.

Leaders and activists from various levels of the party were present at the event.
