A group of armed, masked assailants entered a shop in Begumganj, Noakhali, and shot a businessman named Mizanur Rahman, alias Mizan (34). The incident occurred around 10:15 PM on Saturday (October 17) at ‘Mizan Store,’ located in Jinu Market, Ward No. 5 of Amanullapur Union in the upazila. The wounded businessman was first taken to the 50-bed Begumganj Upazila Health Complex and subsequently transferred to the 250-bed Noakhali General Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was later sent to Dhaka for advanced medical treatment.

Mizan is the son of Ahammad Ullah, from the ‘Ahammad Ullah-er Notun Bari’ (Ahammad Ullah’s New House) in Purba Jaynarayanpur village, Ward No. 6, Amanullapur Union, Begumganj Upazila. He supports the local Jamaat-e-Islami. According to local sources, Mizan was busy attending to customers at his grocery shop on Saturday night. At that moment, a group of 20–25 armed, masked individuals entered the shop.

At one point, the assailants fired shots at him from very close range. He sustained gunshot wounds to the left side of his abdomen, his left arm, and his left thigh. He collapsed to the ground, bleeding profusely. The assailants then fled the scene immediately. After receiving the information, law enforcement officials visited the site. Md. Abu Zayed, the Begumganj Upazila Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, stated, “Mizan is well-known to us; he is a supporter of Jamaat.” “In 2020, this businessman was attacked by members of the Awami League—an organization now banned. At that time, they beat him and handed him over to the police.”

“This time, they entered his shop wearing masks and shot him.” “Since they were masked, no one could be identified immediately.” “It is suspected that individuals associated with the banned organization may be involved in this attack.” Md. Shamsuzzaman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Begumganj Model Police Station, stated that the businessman was injured by pellet fire. Upon receiving the information, the police visited the scene. Efforts are underway to determine who was involved in the attack. Further legal action will be taken once a written complaint is received.
