A brutal attack on a doctor on duty at Shariatpur Sadar Hospital over the death of a patient has taken place. The doctor, Dr. Nasir Islam, was seriously injured in the incident. Later, as his physical condition deteriorated, he was sent to Dhaka by air ambulance for better treatment.

The incident took place on the hospital premises on Friday (May 15) night. According to hospital sources, Lal Mia Kazi, a resident of Uttar Bilashkhan area of ​​Shariatpur Municipality, was admitted to the hospital after suffering a heart attack. When his condition deteriorated, the on-duty doctor Dr. Nasir Islam referred him to the National Heart Institute in Dhaka. However, the patient died before he could be taken to the ambulance.

After the news of the patient’s death spread, some outsiders along with relatives created tension in the hospital. At one point, accusing the doctor of negligence, they entered Dr. Nasir Islam’s room, dragged him out and beat him up. According to eyewitnesses, the doctor fell to the ground as the attackers continued to punch and kick him. Even then, the attack continued. He suffered serious injuries to his head and various parts of his body.

The CCTV footage of the hospital also captured the attack. The injured doctor’s elder brother Nazrul Islam said that Nasir Islam joined the government service through BCS just three months ago. He said that it is very sad to be the victim of such an attack after coming to work with a spirit of service. He also demanded a proper investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment for those involved.

The hospital’s resident medical officer, Dr. Mitu Akter, said the attack on the doctor on duty was highly unfortunate. As the doctor’s condition is critical, he has been urgently sent to Dhaka for better treatment.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Shah Alam, officer-in-charge of Palang Model Police Station, said that one person has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident. Work is underway to identify the remaining attackers by analyzing CCTV footage. Legal proceedings, including filing a case, are underway in the incident.
