5 members of inter-departmental thief gang arrested in Chunarughat shop theft incident

The police have arrested 5 people on the charge of stealing money from the gang of thieves by breaking the shelves of Azizul Haque’s shop in Islam departmental store of Haji Cherag Ali Market located on Balla Road in Paur Town of Chunarughat Upazila of Habiganj.

They were arrested in various places including Shaistaganj, Olipur and Habiganj Sadar in the district. The arrested persons were handed over to the court on Wednesday (April 19) morning.

The arrested are: Md Farjat Hossain Prakash Sajib (43), son of Md Rafiq Mia, the godfather of divisional thief gang of Asadganj No. 119 of Kotwali police station of Chittagong district, Bangra of Bangura village of Bangra upazila of Comilla district (son of Harun Or Rashid, a tenant of Hanif Sarkar’s house adjacent to Grameen Bank). Hanif alias Tunda Hanif (43), son of Abdus Chattar Mia, son of Abdus Chattar Mia, a resident of Sonakanda village, Muradnagar upazila, present Chittagong district, Bau-bazar Khejurtali area, Muradnagar upazila, Comilla district, resident of Beri Badh (adjacent to Idris graveyard, Shushunda Bhubangarh, Muradnagar upazila). Md Tauhid alias Taufiq (25), son of Gholam Mostafa alias Abul Hashem (25), Hriday Chandra Sarkar (19), son of Sajib Chandra Sarkar, resident of Sajdapur village of Sarail Upazila of Baria district.
Earlier on Tuesday afternoon on April 18, victim Bikash’s shopkeeper Azizul Haque filed a case against the unknown accused at Chunarughat police station. On the day of the incident on April 14, the CC camera footage was examined while investigating the shopkeeper’s verbal complaint. In the CCTV footage of the shop, it can be seen that one of the thieves broke the plate of Bikash’s shop and took money from the cash. Later, the remaining four of the gang also left. Later, several teams of Thana police conducted raids using modern information technology in various districts including Habiganj. Finally, on April 18, on the basis of secret information, a group of police led by OC Chunarughat police station Md Rashedul Haque, including Inspector Investigation Golam Mostafa and SI Fazle Rabbi, conducted a night raid and first arrested Md Farjat Hossain Prakash Sajeeb, the ringleader of the gang. Later, according to the information given by him, the remaining four people were arrested.

The arrested persons admitted to the police during the interrogation that they used to send money or looted money from the cash not only in Chunarughat but also in different districts by using mobile phones of development shops. Meanwhile, stolen cash of Tk 90,000, 1 cutting machine, 7 old mobiles of different models, 1 camera, 1 black bag and mobile recharge cards of various operators worth Tk 3,000 were recovered from them. All of them are members of departmental thieves gang. Among them, Md. Farjat Hossain Prakash Sajeeb has 12 cases including theft, preparation for robbery, weapons, drugs in different police stations of the country. There are 3 cases of theft, robbery preparation, weapons against his accomplice Hanif, 1 drug case against Jamal Mia, 2 cases against Tauhid alias Taufiq. Confirming this information, Chunarughat police station OC Md. Rashedul Haque said that this gang is a member of an inter-departmental gang of thieves, they target development shops and collect money by breaking the dishes of the shops and looting money from the cash. On April 14, at approximately 5:50 PM, a shop floor of Azizul Haque of Islam Departmental Store of Haji Cherag Ali Market located at Balla Road in Pur town of Chunarughat was broken and a mobile phone set worth Tk. The band of thieves ran away with it. So far 5 thieves have been arrested and sent to court. Efforts are on to recover the remaining stolen money and mobile.
