The Udichi artists’ group has condemned the re-arrest of Sunamganj’s Shalla Jhumon Dash under the Digital Security Act and demanded his immediate release. They claimed this in a notification on Friday.

It is known that the police took Jhumon Dash to the police station for questioning from his house in Noagaon village of Shalla upazila on Tuesday morning around a recent Facebook post. At the end of the day’s interrogation, he was arrested in the case filed by the police at night.

About two and a half years ago, Jhumon had to go to jail in a case filed by the police under the Digital Security Act surrounding a Facebook post, which drew widespread criticism. He was released on bail in that case, but this time he had to be imprisoned in a new case.

Udichi President Professor Badiur Rahman and General Secretary Amit Ranjan Dey said in a statement that Jhumon Das was banned from leaving Sunamganj, even though he was released on bail after serving a long term in prison. His movements were also controlled in various ways. Still, the police called Jhumon Das to the police station again on the night of August 30, Tuesday, based on the post on Facebook.

After being detained for about 12-13 hours, he was arrested under the Digital Security Act, the statement said. However, in the Facebook post for which Jhumon was arrested, Jhumon Das condemned the hanging of donation boxes at the gate of a temple in Sirajganj.

The statement also said that the police arrested the person who criticized the act without taking any action against those involved in the act of communal incitement like putting donation box at the gate of the temple. Udichi thinks this is a very surprising and reprehensible act.

In addition to the immediate release of Jhumon Das, the Udichi leaders’ statement demanded swift legal action against those involved in installing the donation box at the temple gate in Sirajganj.

Apart from this, the organization also demanded repeal of laws that ‘curb’ freedom of expression, including the Digital Security Act.
