7,713 people lost their lives on the roads in 2022

In 2022, 7 thousand 713 people were killed in 6 thousand 829 accidents. And 12 thousand 615 injured. As such, last year an average of 21.13 people were killed in road accidents.

This information was given by the Road Safety Foundation at a press conference titled ‘Publication and review of annual report of road accidents in 2022′ at Dhaka Reporters Unit in Segunbagicha of the capital on Saturday.

Earlier, on January 2, another organization named Jatri Kalyan Samiti said in its annual report that 9 thousand 951 people were killed on the roads in 2022. And on January 4, Want Safe Roads (Nischa) reported that 7,488 people lost their lives on the roads in 2022, including 30 percent public and post-accident deaths. While the numbers varied in the three organizations’ reports, all said road accidents and casualties increased in 2022.

According to the Road Safety Foundation report, the highest number of accidents involved motorcycles, as did the two organizations. 3 thousand 91 people were killed in 2 thousand 973 motorcycle accidents. Which is 40.07 percent of the total number of victims. Motorcycle accident rate is 43.53 percent. In 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022, the number of deaths in accidents involving vehicles other than motorcycles is almost the same. Motorcycle accidents and casualties are increasing.

According to the Road Safety Foundation, the report was prepared based on the news of 9 national dailies, 7 online news portals and TV channels. 319 people lost their lives in 197 boating accidents last year. 73 injured and 92 missing. 326 people died in 354 railway accidents. 113 people were injured.

The Road Safety Foundation has recommended 10 points including the implementation of the Road Transport Act to prevent accidents. Saidur Rahman, executive director of the organization presented the report at the press conference. Vice Chairman Abdul Hamid Sharif, Professor Hasina Begum, Samajtantrik Sramik Front President Rajekuzzaman Ratan, Accident Research Institute Assistant Professor Shahnewaz Rabbi, Journalist-Columnist Tariq Chayan and others were present.
