Police have arrested a man for allegedly claiming to be the Prophet Jesus by placing the holy Quran, the holy book of Muslims, in the prayer room of a church in Rajshahi during Christmas, the biggest religious festival of Christians.
He was arrested at 12 noon on Sunday (December 25) from the Newmarket area of the city.
After this incident, the security system has been strengthened in the churches of the city. The arrested person’s name is Golam Chowdhury (34). He is the son of deceased Quddus Chowdhury of Chhota Bangram New Colony area.
According to the police, around 7:30 AM on Sunday morning, Uttam Meshapalak, located in Baganpara of Kashiadanga police station area, came to the Cathedral Church wrapped in a red cloth and left the Holy Quran in the church. Later, the church officials informed the police. Then the CCTV footage of the church was collected. At the same time Golam Chowdhury was identified and arrested after seeing the CCTV footage installed at different intersections of the city.
In a press conference on Sunday (December 25) afternoon, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique confirmed these facts and said that the arrested Golam Chowdhury claimed himself as Prophet Jesus. In the initial interrogation, he said, the Good Shepherd left the Holy Quran in the church to destroy the religious solemnity and communal harmony of Christmas, the birthday of Jesus Christ, to destroy religious sanctity and create anarchy across the country. RMP Commissioner also said that legal action has been taken against him.
In this regard, Father Uttam Rezario of the Good Shepherd Cathedral Church said that a person appeared in the prayer room of the church at one stage of the religious ceremony. At that time, few people were present in the worship room. The man asked one of them to take the Quran in his hand. However, because he did not take it, the stranger left the Quran in the prayer room of the church.
