Tourist Police Set a precedent for tourist safety in Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar is the busiest and most sensitive tourist area in Bangladesh. Every day, thousands of domestic and foreign tourists flock to the world’s longest beach. While the arrival of so many people is enriching the tourism economy, it is also creating new risks of crime and chaos. In this reality, the Tourist Police of the Cox’s Bazar region has gradually established a unique example.
They have played an effective role in every field from crime prevention to humanitarian services. It is known that from February 2 to September 18, 2025, the Tourist Police of this region arrested 25 robbers, 34 floating criminals, 8 eve-teasers and 3 drug dealers.
During this time, 134 lost children, 24 mobile phones, 10 living people and 19 dead bodies were recovered. During the same period, the Tourist Police received court orders to investigate 169 CR cases.
Out of which 115 have been settled and 54 are still pending.
In addition, out of 14 GR cases, 10 have been settled. Of which 6 are in the form of charge sheets and 4 in the form of final reports.
The rapid and technology-based steps taken by the Tourist Police to curb crime are now a topic of discussion in Cox’s Bazar.
These include the recovery of 10,500 taka and an iPhone 16 Pro Max stolen from a tourist and the arrest of 5 accused.
The lost bag of Russian tourist Monica Kabir was recovered and returned in just two days. 17 cameras were seized in the tourist harassment incident, action was taken against those responsible.
The tourist’s lost camera was recovered within 24 hours of receiving the news. 13 men and women were arrested during a drive to prevent anti-social activities in the House area.
A tunnel was also discovered during this time. Multiple drives were conducted to stop harassment on the beach, recording TikTok videos, and illegal spa activities. The humanitarian activities of the Tourist Police in Cox’s Bazar have been praised by ordinary tourists and locals. A lost blind child, a loving couple, and a cheated woman were returned to their families. A woman who fled from Barguna was rescued and handed over to her family. A Tourist Police Service Center has been established to ensure quick service, and 10 wheelchairs have been provided to physically disabled and elderly tourists. Two female police members have won the ‘Women Tourism Leader Award’, which highlights the role of the Tourist Police in ensuring women’s leadership and safety at the international level.
Apart from crime prevention, the Tourist Police of Cox’s Bazar Region is also playing a significant role in maintaining the environment and order. Steps were taken to preserve the natural beauty of the beach by razing an extended part of the Mermaid Beach Resort.
Beach cleaning programs were held on the beach and waste was provided. Campaigns were conducted against rotten fish sellers, unscrupulous businessmen and hotel owners.
A hotel employee was arrested and disciplinary action was taken on the charge of giving tubewell water instead of mineral water to a German tourist. A campaign was conducted to evict illegal shops and sandbank occupiers. These initiatives of the Tourist Police have also been recognized by local tourism entrepreneurs.
Cox’s Bazar Tourism Business Society and Kalatali Marine Drive Hotel Resort Owners Association recently presented certificates of gratitude to the Tourist Police.
Tourist Police Cox’s Bazar Region Additional DIG Apel Mahmud said that to make Cox’s Bazar tourist-friendly, the Tourist Police wants to build a culture of security through awareness, cooperation and service. Tourism security analysts believe that the success of the Tourist Police in Cox’s Bazar is not limited to crime prevention; rather, their activities are now seen as a humane and service-oriented policing model. However, experts have warned that the types and tactics of crime are changing rapidly. Therefore, it is important to further increase the training, technical capabilities and human resources of the Tourist Police. They said that to maintain this success of the Tourist Police, permanent manpower, adequate equipment and a comprehensive tourism security policy are needed.
