Production of indigenous probiotics through ‘mass culture’ method in shrimp hatchery

A workshop on presenting results titled “Application of indigenous probiotics in shrimp hatcheries” was held at Dhaka University. The workshop was organized on Thursday morning, July 10, at the auditorium of the University’s Department of Fisheries. Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries Project (SCMFP) implemented by the Department of Fisheries with funding from the World Bank This important workshop was held under the sub-project titled “Domestic Probiotics” implemented by the Aquatic Animal Health Group of the Department of Fisheries, Dhaka University. Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Education) Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed attended the workshop as the chief guest and provided valuable feedback. He emphasized on continuing research on such important issues, especially through collaboration between Dhaka University, the Department of Fisheries, and various shrimp hatcheries. Barun Chandra Biswas, Deputy Director of the Sustainable Coastal and Marine Fisheries Project, was the guest of honor at the workshop held under the chairmanship of Mohammad Mamun Chowdhury, Chairman of the Fisheries Science Department of Dhaka University. The special guests were Professor Dr. Md. Enamul Haque, Dean of the Faculty of Biology, University of Dhaka, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Chief Scientific Officer of Cox’s Bazar BFRI, and Saif Rahman, Chief Executive Officer of Niribili Group. Teachers from the Departments of Fisheries, Botany, Biochemistry and Integrative Sciences of Dhaka University, representatives from Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Bangladesh Maritime University, Jagannath University, National Institute of Biotechnology, and Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council were present at the workshop. Owners, managers, and technicians from various shrimp hatcheries in Cox’s Bazar participated and provided their valuable feedback on the mass culture project of indigenous probiotics. The workshop was very lively, interactive, and all stakeholders sincerely appreciated the research findings. The importance of participatory collaboration and adoption of technology by various stakeholders at the research team and hatchery level was specifically discussed, which will help bring about real-world changes in the shrimp hatchery sector in Bangladesh. The project’s lead researcher was Professor Dr. Mohammad Shamsur Rahman of the Department of Fisheries Science, Dhaka University, and Shaon Ahmed, a lecturer in the Department of Fisheries Science, the university, served as the associate researcher.
