Hannan Rahim, a student of the 2017-18 batch in the Mathematics Department and the General Secretary of the Theater Club at Comilla University, was detained by RAB-11 on Friday night. He was taken from his mess at Kotbari, near the university, around 9:00 PM. It is reported that he was taken for questioning based on false allegations. However, Hannan had been active on social media in recent days, speaking out against the banned extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir. Hannan had posted on Facebook, condemning the group, with statements like, “Hizb ut-Tahrir League,” and “Resist Hizb ut-Tahrir. If you know anyone involved, cooperate with the administration by providing their list.” According to sources, after being transferred to the Kotwali Police Station in Comilla, Hannan was interrogated and released around midnight. In his statement, Hannan explained that he became a target after raising voice on issues related to recruitment corruption at the university. He had also reviewed CCTV footage to catch an extortionist, which likely led to his being targeted by certain groups. He later learned that a misinformation campaign had been launched against him by a circle within the university. Hannan further mentioned, “When I was taken by RAB, they asked me several questions and examined my previous posts and mobile phone. After that, they realized that the information provided against me was completely false, and they later apologized.” Speaking to the Kotwali Police, they confirmed that Hannan was detained based on incorrect information provided to RAB-11. They further stated, “Once he was handed over to us, we interrogated him and then transferred him to the university’s Proctor’s office.” RAB-11 also commented, “He was detained on suspicion of being involved with Hizb ut-Tahrir. However, it was based on incorrect information. There is a list of about 10-12 individuals who are suspected of being involved with Hizb ut-Tahrir, and they will be detained in the coming days.”
