Keeping the Rohingya issue alive is not only for political gain, but the government is doing business with them. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged that the government has completely failed to solve this problem.

At a press conference at the party chairperson’s office in Gulshan in the capital on Thursday (August 25) afternoon, he said that no effective steps have been taken to resolve the crisis.

Shairul Kabir Khan, member of media cell of BNP, Shamsuddin Didar, member of Chairperson’s media wing were present in the press conference.

Mirza Fakhrul pointed out that the Bangladesh government has failed to solve the Rohingya problem even after five years and said that this government has been using the Rohingya issue as an issue for political gain since the beginning.

He also said that since 2017, Bangladesh has been carrying the burden of more than 1 million Rohingyas. “According to the news published in Prothom Alo on August 22, an average of 30,000 Rohingya children are being added every year”. Accordingly, the number of Rohingyas has increased to more than 1.2 million in the last four years and this number will continue to increase day by day.

Bringing up the subject of foreign policy, Fakhrul said that due to knee-jerk foreign policy, the government has failed to apply pressure on Rohingya repatriation in the international arena.

BNP Secretary General said that the Rohingya problem is causing unbearable pressure on the economy of Bangladesh on the one hand, on the other hand it is causing extreme instability and uncertainty in the local environment, neighborhood and social livelihood. The turbulent and unstable situation caused by drug trade, women trafficking and various anti-social and illegal activities in Rohingya camps, involvement of Rohingyas in drug smuggling and drug trafficking, killing of Rohingya leaders in Rohingya conflicts, etc. have become a cause of extreme concern.

Fakhrul also said that many are dying while crossing the sea in the hope of a better future. On the other hand, providing housing and food for more than 12 lakh Rohingya people, provision of cleanliness with sanitary system, providing health services, education of Rohingya children growing up in camps and elderly education system, entertainment, lifestyle etc. is a huge task that is very expensive and depends on efficient management. Especially during the post-Covid crisis, it has become impossible for Bangladesh, which is already burdened with the burden of 170 million people, to bear this additional burden of Rohingyas.

He said that the Rohingya crisis is not the only crisis of Bangladesh. This is a global crisis. But unfortunately, the Bangladesh government has not been able to properly motivate or hypnotize the international community that the Rohingya crisis is a global crisis. The international community has not come forward to solve the Rohingya crisis in the same way that the international community has responded or acted in other humanitarian crises in the world. This is undoubtedly nothing but an extreme diplomatic failure of the Bangladesh government.
