Outgoing country director of the World Bank, Mercy Miang Tembon, praised the overall socio-economic development of Bangladesh, including the empowerment of women under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The World Bank country director said that he has visited various places in Bangladesh and was impressed by its grassroots development. Citing the example of a village in Comilla, Tembon said he was happy to see small houses where every family had planted trees and cultivated vegetables in their house premises. He applauded the Prime Minister for his shelter scheme.

In this context, the Prime Minister said that both the husband and wife are the owners of the houses under the project and they are using their land for vegetable cultivation.

Tembon said he was very happy to see students and others involved in paddy harvesting to help farmers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The prime minister said in this context that the leaders and activists of her party Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated organizations have done this out of their political commitment. The task was not so easy and his government had to face many difficulties for it.

Mentioning that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman laid the foundation for women’s development in this country, he said that his government is following Bangabandhu’s footsteps and implementing various initiatives to ensure equal rights for women.

He also said that the presence of women in all fields including sports and employment has been ensured by removing obstacles to women’s progress.

He handed over an invitation to the Prime Minister to attend the World Diabetes Federation Congress. This congress will be held in Portugal next December where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be announced as the first global ambassador of diabetes.

Sheikh Hasina thanked the governing body of the World Diabetes Federation for unanimously awarding her the title. He emphasized on various measures to control diabetes by changing dietary habits and creating mass awareness.
