In Kamalganj of Moulvibazar, the low-lying areas have been submerged in water due to continuous rains and water coming down from the hills. Due to the connection of the mouth of the newly constructed canal of Kamalganj municipality with the river Dhalai, water is entering through the canal and entering various areas of Ward No. 2, 5 and 6 of Kamalganj municipality. About 200 families and 10 shops in 3 wards have been submerged in water. Water has already started entering their residences and shops. Due to the sudden increase in water, the people of the family are in trouble. However, the water is starting to decrease since last night, told CNBangladesh, the executive engineer of Moulvibazar Water Development Board. Javed Iqbal.
On Thursday, the surface area of Kamalganj municipality was visited. Due to heavy rainfall, river water entered the municipality through the drains of the area adjacent to the old bridge of Dhalai river. The municipal area has four villages including Chandipur, Uttar Alepur, Panishala, road, Kamalganj police station, post office, Kamalganj model government high school, Kamalganj. Girls High School and surrounding houses are submerged. Apart from this, due to the increase in heavy rainfall, the aush cropland in the lower part of the upazila, Alinagar, Adampur and Madhavpur areas were submerged in water.
The water-logged people said that recently unplanned drains were dug through the municipality. The water of Dhalai river entered through this channel and we became waterlogged. If we don’t put swiss gate in the canal, we will be water trapped if the river water rises.
Mayor of Kamalganj Municipality. Jewel Ahmed said that due to the increase in the water of Dhalai river, water entered the 3 wards of the municipality and several families were trapped in water. We are distributing dry food to them on behalf of the municipality. Also, quick steps are being taken to prevent water ingress through drains.
Water Development Board Moulvibazar’s Kamalganj observer Sakib Hossain confirmed the truth of the increase in the water of the Dhalai river and said that if there is no rain, the water in the river will decrease from the evening. However, he said that there is a fear that the water level of Dhalai river will increase if the rain does not decrease in the Indian hilly areas upstream. The water level of Dhalai river in the Bhanugach rail bridge area has not crossed the danger level now. However, if the rains in the upstream Indian hilly areas do not subside, the situation in the Dhalai River is likely to worsen.
The executive engineer of Moulvibazar Water Development Board visited the scene. Javed Iqbal said, according to the flood rehabilitation and warning information, the water level of Dhalai River in Kamalganj may rise and exceed the danger level due to the possibility of heavy rainfall in the Indian hilly areas upstream. For this reason, all necessary measures have been taken by the water development board, district, municipality and upazila administration.
Kamalganj Upazila Acting Executive Officer and Kamalganj Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Raich Al Rejuan said that the list of water-logged families is being made. Dry food will be distributed to them by the administration.
