Locals have held a protest meeting to prevent garbage disposal on the jetty road acquired by the Srimangal Municipality of Moulvibazar.
Nahar protest meeting was held on Moulvibazar road on Friday (June 16) at 4 pm.
Upazila Chairman Bhanu Lal Roy spoke as the chief guest at the protest meeting presided over by local resident Asad Mia and moderated by Asit Pal. Professor Vijay Chandra Debnath, Yad Ali, Haji Abdus Sobhan, Saidul Haque, Faiz Ahmed, Jeevesh Chandra Das, UP member Maruf Ahmed, Badruddoha etc.
The chief guest in the meeting, Upazila Chairman, said that when the initiative was taken to acquire land in Jetty Road area from the Moulvibazar District Commissioner, he objected to the District Commissioner as the representative of the local people and the chairman of Sadar Union Parishad at that time. But no one knows how the place was acquired here later. Later, when the municipality took the initiative to dump the garbage, the local people resisted and later they filed a writ in the High Court. The court granted suspension.
He also said that if there is a renter of garbage on the land acquired by the municipality, the residents of the surrounding areas including Jetty Road will have to suffer from the stench of garbage.
He suggested that the municipal council mayor, local MPs and everyone agree to find an alternative place.
It is to be noted that since 2017, students and residents of the area have been protesting since 2017 to demand the transfer of municipal waste bins from Srimangal College Road to three educational institutes, mosques and residential areas, but the local residents have been blocking the disposal of garbage in the acquired space next to Hail Howar in JT Road area and the latest petition was filed in the High Court. If done, all activities are stopped due to the suspension order of the court. Meanwhile, due to dumping of garbage on the city’s college road, the residents including the students have suffered greatly due to the stench of the garbage.
