I am afraid to live in a broken house. It moves only in the wind. If you see a cloud in the sky, you have to run to someone else’s house. The upazila administration and local people’s representatives went from door to door to get the house as a gift from the Prime Minister but nothing was done.

If you had given me a paved house under this project, I would have been able to sleep peacefully at my last age. Sindubala Sarkar, wife of deceased Monindranath Sarkar of Tarfbajit (Dakshinpara) village of Jamalpur Union of Sadullapur Upazila of Gaibandha, was saying these words in a tearful voice.

It is known that Sindubala’s husband died seven years ago. He earns his livelihood by laboring in other people’s houses. He lives in a high-risk house. He spends sleepless nights in the broken house in fear of fog, rain and wind. To get rid of this, the administration and public representatives went door to door for the Prime Minister’s gift house. Despite everyone’s promises, he still hasn’t got the desired house.

Recently, it is known on the surface that Sindubala’s husband died leaving only a few hundreds of acres of land. Besides, there is no support. Even though he has already fallen under the burden of age, he has to run to the farmer’s field or to someone else’s door in order to earn a living. In order to survive, sometimes the farmer has to sell his labor in the cropland, and sometimes he has to do jhi work in other people’s houses. This is how Sindubala is making a living. In the meantime, his appreciation for those works has also decreased. Because of one thing, the people of the area do not call him for work now due to old age and various ailments. As a result, Sindubala has to live a non-human life.

In the existing situation, the widow’s only bedroom is also dilapidated. Perforated tin trays are fitted with polythene and triple. During the day, sunlight can be seen through a hole in the fence. At night, the stars of the sky catch the eye from above the chala. Sindubala is living at the risk of life in a broken house in Joratali. You will sleep well at night after working hard all day with a handful of food, but no sleep comes to your eyes. He spends sleepless nights alone in fear of cold winter and rain and wind. If you see clouds in the sky during monsoons, you have to run to someone else’s house. And in winter the bedding gets wet in Konkan wind and fog. Due to living in this dangerous house, various diseases have settled in Sindubala’s body. He does not even have the ability to take medicines regularly to cure these diseases. Defeated in the battle of life, somehow survived in that broken house. He is living alone in a dilapidated house at the risk of his life.

Chanchal Sarkar, Sindbala’s nephew, said that Sindubala is now going through a difficult day after losing her husband. He has no children. Only one house is broken again. Totally uninhabitable. So I built a tinned house, accommodated him in that house.

Jamalpur Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Zahid Hasan Shubo (Kauchara Mandal) said over the phone, “I am not aware of the fact that Sindubala does not have a house.” Will be looked into.

Sadullapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) deleted. Roksana Begum said that the matter of Sindubala will be looked into and arrangements will be made.
