In Gouripur, Mymensingh, police have arrested five individuals—including the nephew of a former Member of Parliament—in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act following a “flash” (spontaneous/unannounced) procession at Dengar Mor in Shyamganj. They were arrested during an operation conducted on Friday night (October 30). On Saturday, they were sent to jail by the court. The arrested individuals are: Ferdous Ahmed Shakil, nephew of former Gouripur MP Advocate Nazim Uddin Ahmed and convener of the Sidhla Union unit of the Swechasebak League; Abdullah Al Mamun, joint convener of the same unit; Apurba, joint convener of the Mailakanda Union unit of the Chhatra League; Chhatra League activist Shahriar Yad; and Humayun Kabir, an Awami League activist from Tarakanda.

According to local sources and the police, a flash procession was held on Friday at Dengar Mor in Shyamganj, organized by the Tarakanda Upazila unit of the Swechasebak League. Participants carried a banner bearing the slogan “Protyaborton 2.0″ (Return 2.0). Leaders and activists from the Awami League and its affiliated organizations took part in the event. Following the filing of a case at the Gouripur Police Station, police conducted an operation that night and arrested the five individuals. Meanwhile, one of the arrested, Shahriar Yad, passed his HSC examinations—the results of which were published on Saturday morning—securing a GPA of 3.67. However, he was unable to share the joy of his success with his family.

His father, Belayet Hossain Manoj—a former acting chairman of the Mailakanda Union Parishad and an Awami League leader—expressed his distress on Facebook. While happy about his son’s academic achievement, he also voiced complaints regarding police harassment. The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Tofael Ahmed, stated that the five individuals were arrested based on video footage and specific information. Habibur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gouripur Police Station, confirmed that the five arrested individuals—accused of participating in a flash procession and attempting to incite subversion—have been sent to court. Operations are currently underway to apprehend other suspects.
