Tea workers protest and submit memorandum in Sreemangal

Tea workers have staged a protest march and submitted a memorandum in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, protesting against the attempt to sabotage the triennial elections of Bangladesh Tea Workers Union and the creation of an artificially unstable situation in the tea industry.

A protest march was taken out with the participation of tea workers from the Bharaura tea garden of the upazila on Tuesday morning. The procession ended at the Divisional Labor Office in Sreemangal after parading various roads.

Later, the Bangladesh Tea Workers Union’s Chief Election Commission submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Labor and Employment and the Director General (Additional Secretary) of the Department of Labor through Deputy Director of the Divisional Labor Office in Sreemangal, Mohabbat Hossain.

At the same time, a memorandum was also submitted to the Deputy Commissioner through Upazila Nirbahi Officer Islam Uddin.

Present at the presentation of the memorandum were Bangladesh Tea Workers Union Acting President Pankaj A. Kanda, Acting General Secretary Nipen Pal, Organizing Secretary Bijoy Hazra, Finance Secretary Paresh Kalindi, Executive President Vaishishtha Tanti, Vice President Jasmine Akhter, Co-Secretary Rekha Bakti, Balishira Valley Organizer Karna Tanti, Vice President Sabita Goala, Manu Dhalai Valley Secretary Nirmal Painka, etc.

Bangladesh Tea Workers Union Organizing Secretary Bijoy Hazra said that they have been agitating for regular elections since the term of the elected committee of the union expired. In view of the demands of the general tea workers, the concerned departments have been contacted to organize the elections quickly.

Deputy Director of the Divisional Labor Department in Sreemangal, Mohabbat Hossain said that everyone must work together to protect the tea industry. The memorandum submitted by the workers will be sent to the Director General and their demands will also be conveyed verbally.
