The rural roads of Paikgacha are changing under the World Food Program (WFP) project
Soladana Union adjacent to the coastal Sundarbans of Khulna is a natural disaster-prone area surrounded by islands. The people of this area, which is constantly plagued by Amphan, tsunami, and cyclones, have to fight. Various roads including the Wabda in this region are in disarray. Along with the government, the donor agency, the World Food Program (WFP) is playing a role in radically changing the communication system.
In the neglected Paikgacha, the development organization Shushilan is implementing development work worth 3 crore 7 lakh 96 thousand 496 taka under the project titled “Disaster Risk Reduction-Community Assets Creation” through Disaster Risk Reduction Activities” funded by Japan Government through the WFP in the 2025-2026 financial year.
Under the project, the Upazila Task Force Committee (UzTFC) led by the UNO in Paikgacha Visited the ongoing activities of two important roads worth 1.25 crore taka and 2,650 meters in length in Soladana Union. The concerned contracting organization has already completed 87 percent of the development work.
The concerned authorities believe that the development of these two roads will make it easier to travel to the upazila headquarters, including the area’s markets, schools, colleges, madrasas, mosques and temples, as well as Cyclone Shelter and to cross rivers, as well as improve the rural economy and the quality of life of the people.
Since the upazila is located on the banks of the Shibsa River adjacent to the Sundarbans, Soladana Union is affected by disasters every year. This union is still far behind in modern public life. The communication system here is the most fragile. As a result, the quality of life of the people has not improved much.
Most of the roads are unusable. As a result, the people here suffer greatly in transportation. Soladana is one of the unions at risk of disasters. During the on-site inspection of the two roads, it was seen that two important roads are being developed in Soladana.
Out of which, a 2 km 420-meter-long road from Amurkata Bazar to Digha is being renovated (BFS). The contract price of the project has been estimated at Tk 99 lakh 52 thousand 904. The contractor is doing the development work.
As a result of the development of this important road, the people of Digha, Dakshin Kainmukhi, Uttar Kainmukhi, Paschim Kainmukhi and Golbunia, including 5 villages, will have easier access to the district and upazila headquarters, Amurkata Bazar and Charbanda Bazar, and schools, mosques and temples.
Similarly, a 230-meter (BFS) road from Soladana Bazar to Kheyaghat is being improved at a cost of Tk 24 lakh 59 thousand 736. The contractor is doing the development work. About 95 percent of its development work has been completed by the contractor.
Once the brick laying work is completed, the road will be 100% usable by people crossing the river. Earlier, the condition of this road at Soladana Kheyaghat was very bad. Due to which thousands of people used to face extreme suffering and hardship every day while crossing the river.
From now on, people of 3 unions including Soladana, Lata and Deluti will have an easier time crossing the river, said former chairman of Soladana Union SM Enamul Haque.
