Attempt to seize home and property after husband’s death in Sreepur

A widow and her two minor children have been accused of attempting to evict them from their husband’s property, beating them, looting them and threatening to kill them in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila.

The victim, Mrs. Rabeya Akhtar (37), has sought the administration’s intervention through a press conference. In a written statement at the press conference, she said that her husband Shahid Sarkar died about 26 days ago. After her husband’s death, she had been living in her in-laws’ house with her two minor sons.

But since her husband’s death, her stepchildren and relatives, including her stepchildren, have been threatening her and her children in various ways and have been conspiring to evict her from her husband’s land and house.

He further alleged that on January 24, 2026, at around 11 am, an arbitration meeting was held in the presence of local dignitaries.

During the arbitration, the other defendants, on the orders of defendant Shaheen Sarkar, abused him in obscene language and started beating him indiscriminately.

At one stage, they forcibly dragged away his three cows and a calf, estimated to be worth around 5 lakh taka.

Victim Rabeya Akhter said that if she stopped him during the incident, the defendants threatened to kill her and her two minor children and hide the bodies. Due to this, she and her children are suffering from extreme insecurity.

Later, helpless, she informed the local dignitaries about the matter and filed a written complaint with the Sreepur Police Station to seek legal assistance. She said that there are multiple eyewitnesses and evidence of the incident.

At the press conference, he strongly demanded that the administration take immediate legal action against the accused, recover the looted cattle, and ensure the safety of his life and property and that of his children.
