9-year-old child injured in Myanmar firing at Hoyaikyang border
A child named Huzaifa Soltana Apnan (9) was seriously injured in the firing from Myanmar in Hoyaikyang Union of Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar. The child is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chittagong. The incident took place this Sunday (January 11) morning in the Longabil Techchi Bridge area of Ward No. 3 of Hoyaikyang Union.
The injured Huzaifa is the daughter of Jasim Uddin and Sumaiya Akhter of the area and a student of Longabil Haji Mohammad Hochan Government Primary School. According to local sources, heavy firing was heard in Myanmar’s Rakhine State opposite the Hoyaikyang BGB post adjacent to the Naf River since Friday night.
At around 9 am on Sunday, a bullet fired from Myanmar crossed about one and a half kilometers and entered Bangladeshi territory, hitting the child in the head. He was seriously injured on the spot and started bleeding profusely.
Later, locals quickly rescued the child and sent him first to a local health center and then to a private hospital in Chittagong for advanced treatment. He is currently undergoing treatment there.
Locals allege that Myanmar’s armed group, the Arakan Army, also used drones to attack during the shelling. During the shelling, damage was also caused to houses, trees and the surrounding area.
Locals said that this is not the first incident. About a month ago, a female resident was shot in the leg by bullets fired from Myanmar in the same Longbeel area. Continuous such incidents have created extreme panic and insecurity among the common people in the border area.
Locals claim that members of Myanmar’s Rohingya terrorist groups – ARSA, ARSU, Alekin and Nabi Hochon groups – are taking positions in the Achariya and Bilaichhariya areas on the Hoiyang border and engaging in clashes with the Arakan Army. During these clashes, the bullets fired by the Arakan Army are reaching the Bangladesh border. Angry locals blocked the Teknaf-Cox’s Bazar highway from Sunday morning over the incident of children being shot.
They demanded that security be strengthened in the border area, the movement of Rohingya terrorists be stopped, and prompt and effective action be taken regarding the treatment of the injured child and his family. At one stage, when the situation became heated, an attack was also carried out on a BGB vehicle.
Former MP Shahjahan Chowdhury, Jamaat-e-Islami MP candidate Principal Maulana Nur Ahmed Anwari, Acting Chairman of Hoiyang Model Union Mohammad Shah Jalal and local public representatives arrived at the scene to control the situation.
Later, the situation was brought under control with the joint efforts of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, BGB, Police and APBN and the road blockade was lifted. Meanwhile, a team of Hoi Kyung Police Station, in collaboration with the BGB, conducted a raid in the border area and arrested about 50 Rohingya terrorists on charges of being involved in clashes with the Arakan Army.
This incident has further strengthened the demand for urgent and effective measures to ensure the lives and security of ordinary people living in the border area.
