A protest rally and assembly were held in Sunamganj demanding the immediate implementation of the government-declared wage gazette in the hotel sector. On Wednesday morning, January 7, the Sunamganj District Committee of the Struggle Council for the Implementation of Government-Declared Minimum Wages and Labor Laws in the Hotel and Restaurant Sector organized the protest march and assembly.Demanding an eight-hour workday, double wages for overtime, issuance of appointment letters and identity cards, and full implementation of labor laws, a red-flag procession started in the morning from in front of the organization’s temporary office at Raypara. The march paraded through the main roads of Sunamganj town and culminated in an assembly at Al-Fattah Uddin Chattar (Traffic Point). The assembly was chaired by Joint Convener Suranjit Das and conducted by Joint Convener Titu Das. Speakers included Sukhen du Talukder Mintu, President of the Sunamganj District Committee of Bangladesh Trade Union Federation; Lilu Mia, Joint Convener of the Sylhet Divisional Committee of the Struggle Council; and members Liton Das, Ziaur Rahman, Amir Uddin, among others. In their speeches, the leaders said, “For a long time, workers in the hotel and restaurant sector have been submitting memorandums and organizing meetings and rallies demanding the implementation of the government-declared minimum wage and labor laws, but the owners have ignored these demands. Due to rising prices of essential commodities and inflation, people are losing confidence in life. In the current market situation with soaring prices, it has become extremely difficult to survive with family members. Therefore, workers have been compelled to announce a work stoppage on the 14th to realize their demands. At the assembly, the speakers called upon all patriotic people to express solidarity and extend cooperation to ensure the implementation of the government-declared minimum wage gazette in the hotel and restaurant sector.”
